Installing Rogue Squadron 3D

Post by Craseder »

So I have used Virtual Box before, but never done anything more than crudely basic with it (I mainly used it to try out the Windows 8 RC way back when, and now use it to test fishy software on that image), but tonight, I have been trying to play some old games, one of which is Rogue Squadron 3D. The game installs fine, but when I try to run it, it crashes with the error "Failed to Intialize HAL," which, after a bit of research, turns out to be an issue with the graphics driver not being detected. I have tried a few things, one of which is to get the extension pack for version 4.1.20 (which I am currently running), and installing the "guest additions" software. This allowed me to run the VM at my laptop's native resolution of 1368x768, but I still can't detect any sort of graphics driver in the game's settings. How do I do this?

the game is looking for "4MB PCI or AGP Direct 3D or Glide-compatible 3D Accelerated Video Card" and DirectX 6. There is no such thing in VirtualBox. I doubt it would even run in Windows 8 or 8.1 on a physical machine.

Supposedly there is direct3D support as a part of VirtualBox's Guest Addition, however it doesn't fix the problem. And no, there's no way to run the game past XP.

I don't have an XP guest to play with so someone else would have to help. however, there was software written directly to hardware for Windows which caused all sorts of issues. It's also possible the game has a list of video cards embedded in the game and of course it wouldn't know about VirtualBox drivers. Maybe someone else can add something to try. I'm guessing it's not going to run in VirtualBox however.

If actual, physical systems have an issue with the game, imagine what a virtualized system will do. Not work. And as far as DirectX, I believe that VBox has 8 and 9 support. loukingjr was absolutely right about the target-group of these games...
