Windows starts and immediately shuts off

Post by drs@dcneuro.net »

I just installed the most recent update this week. Today I start the VM and as soon as windows desktop comes up, windows crashes and immediately closes. What could be causing this? Any similar reports with the new update?

v 4.3.10
Base memory is 1024mb.
Log file is attached.

Actually, log file was attached. I get an error mess at that the extension is not allowed when I click on submit.

I even tried pasting the text into this message, it says it was too many characters and not allowed...

compress it then attach
The file should end in .log and that extension is allowed.

Code: Select all

VirtualBox VM 4.3.10 r93012 darwin.amd64 (Mar 26 2014 18:59:40) release log
Guest Additions information report: Version 4.1.14 r77440 '4.1.14'
The only thing that seems out of place is the guest additions are not in sync with the version of VirtualBox. This usually does not mean a lot with XP but it might. Other than that you will need to see why the guest is rebooting.

I did see the following:

Code: Select all

00:00:05.010395 fHMForced=true - 64-bit guest
And I doubt that you have actually installed 64-bit XP especially since IO APIC is not enabled.
You might try disabling longmode.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage modifyvm <vmname> --longmode off
Then see if it will boot.

How do I change those settings? The 32/64 bit setting under general is greyed out. And I have no idea about the long mode setting. I can reinstall the extensions easily enough.

You have chosen a 32bit template, but VirtualBox still says it's a 64bit guest. Why does VirtualBox think you have a 64bit guest - are you sure you didn't already try the longmode trick?

You use VBoxManage. Perry gave you the command to use.

Sorry, but much of this is greek to me. Vbox manage? Under file I see a virtual media manager, which does not look like that to which you are referring. I couldn't find anything in the user manual on Vbox manage either.

How do I do that?

I think you would greatly benefit from looking at the user manual.

Open a terminal on the host and enter the command below:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage modifyvm <vmname> --longmode off
Replace <vmname> with the actual name of the guest and if it has spaces wrap the name in quotes " "

I do not know how I get to the command area to type these commands. I do not see anything referencing this under vbox manage in the user manual either.

See "Chapter 8 - VBoxManage" in the user manual.

It's a terminal window command. You will need to learn how to use the command line in OS X.
