Host's name known on Ethernet, unknown on Wifi

On a laptop, I'm running a Windows XP virtual machine on a Windows 8.1 host. When I switch the host from an ethernet cable to Wifi, the virtual machine stops being able to resolve the host's hostname.
So on Wifi, this command fails with "unknown hostname":
ping name_of_host
But on etternet it succeeds.
One way to resolve this is to change the virtual machine from NAT to Bridged. In bridged mode, the VM can resolve the host's name just fine.
Any ideas on what might cause this issue?
