The domain controller for this domain cannot be located.

Post by FredS52 »

I am trying to connect Windows NT 4.0 to our domain. I want the machine to be just another machine on the network when it is running so I set it up with a Bridged adapter. I don’t plan on running any other VMs on the same host that it should interact with.

When I try to join the domain I get “The domain controller for this domain cannot be located.”

My host machine is Windows 7, 64 bit, with Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

VirtualBox version 4.3.10 r93012

Adapter type, Intel PRO/1000MT Desktop, (works the same with PCnet-FAST III)

We have two domains/controllers; a Small Business Server 2003, and a Server 2012R2. I can ping both domain servers from the VM. I can ping the VM from both domain servers. I can map drives on the VM to both domains by entering domain admin credentials. I get the same error trying to connect to either domain.

I noticed that the Intel virtual card indicates it is connected at 1000 Mb, but the Realtek is connected at 100 Mb.

Thanks in advance for any help

The guests DNS needs to point to the DC machine.
Of course the DC must have been setup to accept the older NT protocol and if not then it will not be able to join.
In any case this is outside the scope of this forum. If the network connection is made VirtualBox has done all that it was supposed to do. MS forums would have a more definitive answer on how to use their software.

The domain controller is set to the DC

Is the fact that the Intel Virtual card reports being connected at 1000 Mb to a 100 Mb network an issue?

No. If you can see the network, your issue is going to be configuration of DC and or guest.
