win98 guest dos application problem

Hello,

I did quite a bit of reading before I got going and migrated a near dead windows 98 computer into virtualbox. Everything works great (for win98) on my linux host.

I copied the vm directory to a windows host, and everything fired up and appears to work great there, too, until you close the dos app (the only reason we need to keep the machine alive), then it throws an error:

The program encountered a general protection exception

This does not happen on the linux host.

I have spent several hours messing with this, trying different settings in virtualbox and in windows 98 on the windows host, and searching google. Even though it appears to be an exact replica from one host to the other and one vm to the other, this dos program just keeps throwing an error on quitting and I can't figure out why it does it on the windows host and not the linux host.

I am baffled how this can be happening, would anyone have any suggestions for me?

If this VM is an exact replica (which you make it sound like it is), then it may be an issue with the host, and more specifically the CPU and the different peripherals. If this is reproducible, you should head to the bugtracker and either search for an appropriate bug (where you'll attach your logs and other vital information), or open a new bug report.

There is not enough information to be certain here, but it could be an issue with whatever screen driver is being used within the Windows 98 guest. Some versions of the BearWindows driver, for instance, are known to have problems with running DOS in a window, though they are normally fine full-screen.
