Network access but no internet on XP guest

Hello all,

I've got a Win XP 64 bit installation, with Win 8.1 as the host. Everything seems to work well, apart from one thing- no internet! The network adapter seems to be installed OK, because I can see my router admin page if I browse to 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer, but I can't seem to get to the internet itself.

My host PC is attached via Ethernet cable to a TP Link TD W8970 router. The router has given the guest PC an IP address, according to the DHCP client list.

I configured the virtual machine to use NAT.

I'm sure someone else must have had this issue, and suspect that I've just missed some simple but crucial step.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Perhaps your host firewall is blocking your traffic. try disabling it for long enough to see if it is the problem.

When you are using nat, your host gives your guest an IP address, not your router. if you want to get an address from your router, try using bridged connection instead...

OK, thanks for the reply - I'll try disabling the firewall and will see what happens. Regarding the IP address, it does look as though the guest PC is somehow getting an IP address from the router and not from the host, even with NAT. It is appearing in the list of DHCP clients on the router (as 192.168.1.106) and also if I run ipconfig from a command prompt on the guest, it also reports that same IP address.

Actually, I was mistaken about the IP address - when I use NAT, the IP address is 10.0.2.15.

However, still no internet, even after disabling the firewall as suggested.

I do now vaguely remember having difficulties that last time I installed Windows XP for real i.e. on a real PC. I seem to remember not having internet for a long time, and it took me ages to find out why. Unfortunately, I've forgotten what it was that I had to do to get it working.

Has anyone else had difficulties getting Windows XP 64 bit to connect to the internet, after a fresh install? (either for real, or on a Virtual Machine).

Thanks,
Ackoman

I think I found the problem. I think either my router is not compatible with XP 64 bit or there is some setting that I need to change to get it to work.

How do I know this? Because, when I connected my host PC to my smartphone's 3G connection, by generating a portable hotspot, and used that instead of my W8970 router. The guest PC was then immediately able to connect to the internet and everything was fine. I then went back to the W8970 and it stopped working again.

I think this is also what I found when I tried to put XP 64 bit onto a real computer a few months ago.
