Vbox says image read-only, sure it's not though

Using Knoppix I dd'ed an 80Gb XP system drive (not the partition) to a file on my Win7 NTFS partition.
I used convertfromraw to create a .VDI.
Then I created a VM, attached the disk and started it.
Getting VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY, but I'm sure the image file certainly is not read-only.
Have tried everything obvious to fix this, including checking read-only attribute on VDI file is not set. The user that virtualbox and vboxsvc runs as has full control of the VDI file. Tried uninstall / reinstall. Run as administrator.
Virtualbox version is 4.3.10 r93012, on a fresh Windows 7 Home 64-bit, up-to-date. The guest is a 32-bit XP.
I can mount the original .dd file using OSFMount with no problems. I can successfully start a VM with a new disk and a boot CD.
Will be grateful of your assistance please! I have gurgled for several hours to no avail.
