We would like to mirgrate/replace/move an existing physical Windows 2000 server into a virtual machine.
So I copied the two hard disks with dd into two image-files.

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/mybook/backupsystemdisk.img
dd if=/dev/sdb of=/media/mybook/backupdatadisk.img
Then

Code: Select all

ls -la /media/mybook/backupsystemdisk.img
250059350016

Code: Select all

ls -la /media/mybook/backupdatadisk.img
150039945216

Code: Select all

cat /media/mybook/backupsystemdisk.img | VBoxManage convertfromraw stdin /media/mybook/Vbox/NT5SP4.vdi 250059350016

Code: Select all

cat /media/mybook/backupdatadisk.img | VBoxManage convertfromraw stdin /media/mybook/Vbox/NT5SP4_data.vdi 150039945216

Code: Select all

ls -la /media/mybook/Vbox/
112038248448 NT5SP4_data.vdi
14811136000 NT5SP4.vdi
I added a virtual machine and connected the harddisk-images to the ide-controller

Then I connected a linux-live-dvd-image, Knoppix 7.2 as CD-ROM and since the following files wer not in \WINNT\system32\drivers, I copied/extracted
4976 Dez 4 1999 atapi.sys
4176 Dez 7 1999 intelide.sys
2992 Dez 7 1999 pciide.sys
21936 Okt 27 1999 pciidex.sys
from \WINNT\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab into \WINNT\system32\drivers\

Then I wanted to follow article Q271965 of microsofts support and use mergeide.reg.

But Windows didn't boot. It just hangs with Windows 2000 is starting (german: Windows 2000 wird gestartet)
with a 100% bar below.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you already! Cheers

Hans
