WindowsXP Pro 64bit chokes on 10.9.2 Mavericks

My host is a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.2, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM and 500GB SSD.

I've successfully installed VB 4.3.10 with no apparent glitches, and I'm trying to create a VM to run Windows XP Pro 64 bit as the guest. I assembled an ISO file from the Windows install disc, and it began to install Windows with no apparent problems on the blue screen, until the message at the bottom said "Setup is Starting Windows". At that point the install choked and I got this error message on the blue screen:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF898054, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

I haven't been a member for a full day yet so I'll post screenshots and attach log files when I can.

as a guess, it sounds like the .iso is bad. XP should install without issues.

I made the ISO on a Windows 8 laptop, from the XP install disc, and saved the ISO to disc then just copied it to a DVD from which I'm trying to install on my MBP. I used ImgBurn to build the ISO, all the files except the boot file came directly from the XP install disc, so....

I have two other DVDs onto which I burned the ISO directly onto the DVD (one with and one without Joliet), so I'll try those as well.

well two things, burn them at the slowest speed and make sure you selected Windows XP 64bit in the VirtualBox settings.

edit: you can also try dragging the .iso from the DVD to your HD. and try from there.

In most cases a "Stop 7B" appears when Windows is unable to access the boot device / harddisk.
What are your settings for the VM, did you select disk controller and chipset manually or which operating system did you select?

No joy with either of the other two DVDs.

Most definitely have Win XP Pro 64 selected when I built the VM - but I will try a re-burn at slow speed and see how that makes out.

Since I am getting hard drive error messages, might it have something to do with the fact that my MBP has a SSD? In the Storage tab there are all sorts of options that are completely mysterious to me, I have no idea what they mean, but I do have the Solid-State Drive box checked.

I went with the defaults as far as disk controller and chipset, have not changed them. I have no idea what they should be given my host and guest.

actually I haven't looked at what the SSD setting is for since I have a Fusion drive but you could try unchecking it.

edit: I think the Windows XP .vdi needs to be on the SATA controller to work with SSD's but I'm not sure about that. Never tried it.

mpack, I have not been a member for a day yet, so can't send images or attachments.

Of course you can. The only thing you can't do is include URLs - the images and log file must be attached directly, which is preferred anyway. Remember to .zip the log file.

Problem solved - may have been the ISO file, the only part of the ISO that did not come directly from the install disc was the boot file, so it may have been corrupt or buggered somehow. They say "get the boot file from a trusted source" but, well....who knows?

My IT guy gave me the ISO for his 32-bit install, I created a 32-bit VM and it installed without a glitch. Thanks everyone for trying to help out with the 64-bit.

BTW - I honestly did try to attach the log file as an attachment, but the system would not let me submit the post because it said my account needed to be at least 1 day old (and have 1 post...which I did).
