How to support 64-bit Win guests?

Post by Bob F »

I'm new to Vbox and I've successfully set up a Win 7 32-bit VM. Works great! However, when trying to create new Windows VMs only 32-bit selections are listed in the "Version" drop-down box. After some searching I've found that Vbox supports 64-bit Win VMs, but I can't find instructions on how to enable that capability. My host is Win 8.1 64-bit on Core i7 with h/w virtualization. My Vbox.log is at: pastebin dot com slash kve0qMAe (sorry about that, apparently I can't provide a proper address until after my first post).

1) 64-bit guests need hardware-virtualzation enabled in the hosts bios.
2) when creating the 64-bit guest you must select 64-bit in General -> Basic -> version.
3) If running Windows as host you must make sure hyper-v or xp mode is not enabled on the host. MS does not play well and wants it all.

I enabled hardware virtualization in the BIOS and now all is well. Thank you, Perry!
