Hello:

I'm running Windows 8.1 (64 bits) (AMD 64 Dual Core 3800 2GHz with 3 GB RAM) as host and I have installed Windows XP SP3 (32 bits) as guest with VirtualBox version 4.3.10.r93012.

I have a lot of questions because yesterday I didn't know anything about VirtualBox but today I was able to install an old CanonScan 3000 that din't work in Windows 8.1 but now it works again in virtual XP. I put it in bold because I am very happy and I consider it a big success although it has been not easy.

As I said I have a lot of questions but I don't know if it would be better to ask them in other posts:

1) The main question is about the activation warning of 30 days for XP running as guest. During the XP installation in the VB I put the correct serial number. I prefer to ask before activate XP because I don't know if the XP activation would interfere with the host Windows 8.1 system.

2) "Virtual Gues Addintions" are mounted and running but the Shared Clipboard and Drag’n’Drop doesn't work. At least I have created a shared folder I am be able to obtain the scanned images by the CanonScan in the host.

activation of your guest has no effect on your host.

as far as the shared clipboard you have to change the guest settings in VirtualBox. General>Advanced>Shared Clipboard> Bi-Directional. Drag n Drop only works from Host to Linux guest as mentioned in the manual.

The guest is a separate PC. Nothing you do it in can affect the host PC in the sense that you mean. Resources such as disk space get used up, that's the only effect which the host sees.

I had activated XP before you answer and no implosion of the Universe has occurred.

Ok, shared clipboard works for typing with keyboard but I don´t know if it would must also work for copy-pasting files.

There are a lot questions I have:

1) With VirtualBox it is possible to run software demos (trial versions) in XP but when the trial period expires, would it be possible to delete the virtual machine and to create a new one to use the demo again?

2) Is it advisable to activate the windows updates in the virtual XP machine? I think no if not a great use of internet browsing is done. Correct me please if I'm wrong.

3) What's the purpose of the net connection created in the host called "VirtualBox Host-Only Network"?. If I don't disable it then my internet connection is lost in the host when rebooting.

Hey man, don't be angry. You has a really aggressive attitude. How do you know I have never developed any software? Everybody navigates at the same boat.

It is different to know if it possible to do something that to be really decided to do it. And of course, it would be possible for the demos to check the hardware OEM or to ask for an activation via server.

And with respect of the other two questions I could also find the answers by my own if you don't want to give me more information.

Ok, my virtual XP SP3 is now up to date (Windows Update worked perfectly) and with an antivirus installed. With the updates and the AV my .vdi has passed from 2 GB to 4.5 GB.

And with respect "VirtualBox Host-Only Network" now I know that is used to maintain connectivity in between several VMs. At the moment I think I'm going not to use this network utility.
