Latest VirtualBox upgrades

Post by DMVC »

Hi.
After upgrading from v.4.3.6.r91406, VirtualBox ends abruptly after login on Debian 64 bits guest. Debian starts fine, this only occurs right after entering the password on login.

First I've tried to upgrade to v.4.3.8 as suggested by the VirtualBox. Then tried to upgrade to v.4.3.10 available on the site. Both of them revealed the same behaviour (after login on Debian guest there's a Virtualbox dialog stating that a problem was encountered and VirtualBox will close).

To solve this issue, I had to downgrade back to v.4.3.6.r91406.

Note: I have another guest OS (Mountain Lion) and it works fine with both upgrades.

My host is Windows 8.

Feel free to ask for more info if needed.

my Debian 7.4 guest runs fine. Which Mac are you trying to run it on?

We will not discuss OS X guests on anything except Apple hosts.

As to the Debian problem, post a VM log file. See Minimum information needed for assistance.

Thanks for replying mpack.
I've attached the VB log file. I think you've everything you need for the analysis.

Note: Guess OS is Debian 7.3 and, once again, my Primary OS is Windows 8.

What happens if you disable 3D for that VM?

Thanks Franks, that did it.
What do I loose by turning off 3D?

I'm now going to upgrade guest additions.

Special thanks to Frank.
I'm new to Debian and VirtualBox, so I guess this was a novice issue. Thank you all for your support.

Some notes that can be helpful to other novices like me:
- Upgrade to VB 4.3.10;
- Disable 3D on display on your Debian guest (I've read somewhere that logging in with Gnome Classic can be enough);
- After login Guest Additions were available (I've got some notifications);
- I followed these instructions to install Guest Additions (remember I'm a novice! :D ):
As I'm a new member I can't post urls, so you should google "Installing Guest Additions for VirtualBox on Debian 7.0 ("Wheezy") with updates for Debian 7.1 and Debian 7.2". Follow the link to Eric James Soltys blog.
- Shut down your guest machine;
- Re-enable 3D;
- Start your machine;

Hope this is helpful.
