Ubuntu 13.10 Host crashes under 4.3.8 after login

Experiencing the following issue after upgrade from 4.3.2 to 4.3.8 on a Windows 7 host using a Ubuntu 13.10 guest where 3D acceleration is turned on for the guest: I get to the standard Ubuntu login screen fine, but after entering my password, VirtualBox crashes with the following at the end of vbox.log:

If I turn off 3D acceleration, it allows me to login successfully and all appears OK. Any ideas here?

Could you recheck with VBox 4.3.10? Don't forget to update the VBox Guest Additions.

Have retested under 4.3.10 (with Vbox guest additions updated appropriately to 4.3.10 from the GuestAdditions iso) and I experience the same issue with 3D acceleration turned on:

"Oracle Virtualbox VM Manager has stopped working"..

With 3D acceleeration off, it seems to work fine. The vm.log looks very similar (with only a single line change in the first server_muralfbo.cpp line - now 266 vs 267 previously):

Is there any further information I can offer to help track down the issue here? The host runs fully patched Win 7 Ultimate SP1 on an i7-3770K with an Intel HD 4000 chipset (driver 9.17.10.2932).

I would install the drivers for your video card on the host. Right now you are using the generic Microsoft drivers and I would think that your video would be better on the host and the guest with the proper drivers.

Drivers updated to the latest graphics driver release from Intel (dated 11-Mar-14, version: 10.18.10.3496) but same issue still exists.

OK but does the log file still say you are running on the MS generic drivers?

I have the same problem just since I've updated Virtualbox software to 4.3.10.

HOst: Win7 64
Gues: Ubuntu 13.10 32bit

This error happens when I want to start Firefox. I have Nvidial graphics with original drivers - not updated recently, but in last half year I did have updated it.

Isn't that actually the problem, that Vbox is trying to talk to Microsoft generic GDI driver, not able to see the actually used one?

I repeated the test again and it worked (which is odd, because when I tested it originally after installing the Intel graphics driver and rebooting, it failed). If it is the use of the stock Win7 drivers that is causing it to fail, I think it's a bug - and a regression as I didn't see this in 4.3.2.

I have found what my problem was: it was breaking down when I restarted the Virtualbox at the moment I was logged to the PC over RDP. At such situation the Windows 7 64bit (to be precise) do NOT use the physical graphics driver (that would be NVIDIA) but some Generic Microsoft one and thus it fails on using 3D HW accel of which the Generic Microsoft "pseudodriver" is not capable of, which was clearly shown in the VirtualBox log I had submitted in my previouis post, only I wasn't sure what exaclty it meant - NOW I have a comparison since I got to work and worked directly with the PC, not over VPN&RDP during the weekend.

SOLUTION:
option A) - disable 3D accel when starting the virtual machine while working with the Windows "hypervisor" over RDP
ooption B) - start the virtual machine while NOT working with the "hypervisor" over RDP - later you can connect over RDP and continue using the once started virtual machine, utilizing 3D hw accel without problems

IMPORTANT: the critical moment is the startup of Virtualbox and/or the virtual machine; you need to do this while NOT being logged on over RDP and everything will be fine (even if you later connect over RDP, the previously started virtual machine won't have problems, well, if it already engaged using the 3D hw capability - that also has to happen BEFOR you log in over RDP).

Compare my previously submitted log to the following (I am pasting only the relevatnt lines thus not the whole log file) when I am physically using the PC, rebooted it and started the VBOX, the virtual machine's log shows following when I start using 3D stuff (in my case starting Firefox):

Yup, I have the same problem. Starting a VM with guest additions installed from an RDP session will use the microsoft rdp video driver, not the actual GPU in my machine. It will crash Ubuntu at login. I found this bug in the tracker: ticket 12860

This is resolved for me with VirtualBox 4.3.22 and its guest additions. The VM does not crash anymore for me. Can anyone else test? It is probably this change (from the changelog):
Windows Additions: prevent VBox WDDM driver from loading if host reports weak OpenGL capabilities. 3D content now can be shown over Remote Desktop connection.
