SSL Port on VBox VM

Post by joeller »

Hello; I have a VBox VM with Windows Server 2003 R2 (64 bit) installed. The host machine is a Windows 7 64 machine. I recently added IIS to the guest machine and installed .Net Framework 4.0. I then deployed a web app to a new site on that Vmachine. The Web app needs to acccess client certificates from the CAC card of the user that is connecting to it. After an number of trials and failures in getting the site to run on the local server, I was able to get it to run from the "browse" context menu item in IIS in when the site was not in SSL. (The port for the new site is 81 when the site was not in SSL, and 443 when the site was in SSL.) When the app is not in SSL, then it is designed to throw an exception reporting the failure to get the client cert. That is what it did in IIS when the "browse" context menu item was clicked on the web app. I went to the Host and typed in the server http://servername:81/WebAppName. This worked, in that it threw the expected exception. However, when I changed the web app back to SSL and changed to URL to https://servername/WebAppName, all I got was "Internet Explorer cannot display webpage". The help I am getting in other forums suggested that the Windows Firewall may not hae the right ports open. However, when I opened the dialog I found that Windows Firewall was not even on.

However it occurred to me that maybe interface between the host and the guest may designate which ports are open on the guest. I opened the Network Adapter in the Devices Menu of the VM. It read Host-Only Adapter, Intel Pro/1000 MT desktop (82540EM), Cable connected, Port Forwarding. I didn't see any other place that might determine what ports are open between VM and host.

Even though I don't know where to look for it, it is still possible that the open ports may be configured somewhere. Can anyone help me with this?
