Hi!

I am using an intel based iMac running OS X 10.9 and attempting to run windows xp sp3 in virtual box. XP has installed fine however i can not seem to get any internet to work! My iMac is connected to a wifi network, how can I get this connection into virtual box?

in the VB networks settings choose NAT or Bridged. Make sure Cable Connected is checked.

Ok I have done this, what settings do i then need to chose in windows XP to get the connection set up. I have tried typing in the IP address that the mac is using however have had no luck!!

Which one? He gave you two possible options and you replied "Yes". Anyway, in either choice, do NOT put your host's IP address as your guest's IP address. Leave it to (the default) DHCP enabled and your guest will get an IP address automatically.

As socratis said, if the guest machine was set up correctly there is no reason XP wouldn't automatically connect. I've installed hundreds of guests over almost 5 years and didn't have to configure any connection inside the guest just to get online.

I too am having issues with wi-fi from the host osx not being shared on Win XP. I have set up numerous iMacs and not had a problem, but the two Mac Airs I have attempted cannot get internet using NAT (cable connected) or using Bridged with the wifi chosen. Anyone have any other ideas?

see this post. there seems to be an ongoing problem with Mac laptops and Wi-Fi and VirtualBox. My iMacs do not have the problem.

I just saw your screenshot. try changing Promiscuous mode to "Deny"

Mine isn't a laptop but an iMac, can you show me a screenshot of your settings to see if I have anything wrong here. Ive looked at that link and they don't seem to have any resolution?

Do I definatley not have to do anything in XP itself?

sorry, I was looking at the user with two Macbook Airs. My settings are the same as yours except the "Deny" setting. You shouldn't have to do anything to XP unless you changed something in it already. I have 51 guests currently, Windows 7 and 8.1 and 49 Linux guests. I didn't have to touch any of the connection settings. I'm running VB 4.3.10

edit: I did have a Windows XP guest up until about a year ago and it was fine also.

Found a fix for this problem, I change the Network Adapter from an INTEL-PRO to a PCnet-PCI II, well this one did the trick not sure if the others would have but i ccb!

Also you need to set it up as Bridge, coz as Bridge you will get a different IP Address from the DHCP Server instead of sharing the one from the Computer you are on, and since this is mostly for testing I reckon that emulating another computer in your network is most of the time the desired outcome from this whole thing!
