64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.4 installed as 32-bit

Post by RJH »

Hello all,

I'm trying to run 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.4 as a guest OS on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. I allocated the standard 512 MB of memory to the guest OS, and the Windows machine has 4 GB total. As far as I can tell, Ubuntu installed in VirtualBox (version 4.3.8) correctly and it runs just fine - see attachment Log-1. However, when I go to System Settings -> Details in the guest Ubuntu OS, it says the operating system type is 32-bit, and binary files meant for 64-bit Ubuntu will not run.

After searching around, the closest issue to the one I have is when 64-bit guest OSs will not install or run, which is usually due to hardware virtualization not being enabled. I've checked my machine and as far as I can tell, hardware virtualization should be OK. The BIOS menu on my computer has no virtualization option, but the Intel website says that the CPU (Intel Core i5 2340M) should support virtualization. All the correct checkboxes in VirtualBox (Enable VT-x/AMD-v, Enable I/O APIC) are checked. I did download the correct 64-bit image file from Ubuntu. and like I said it installed and runs with no errors.

Has anyone else encountered this? How do I get the guest OS to be 64-bit? If I need to provide any more information I'll be happy to do so.

Thanks in advance for your time and any assistance you can provide.

Rogue smiley! The VirtualBox version I'm using is 4.3.8, not 4.3.8)

From what I can tell from the logs, you are running a 64-bit host and you have selected (correctly) 'Ubuntu_64' as your guest. The problem is that the guest Ubuntu says its 32-bit? Can you triple-check that you installed the 64-bit Ubuntu and not the 32-bit? Please post your <Ubuntu>.vbox and the "uname -a" output of your Ubuntu.
