VBoxManage --compact fails in 4.3.x series

Win 7 host, openSUSE 13.1 guest.

Running VboxManage with the --compact option fails (with a Windows error message) in VirtualBox versions 4.3.0, 4.3.2 and 4.3.8 (I have not tried any version between the last two). This command works fine in e.g. 4.2.24.

Is this a known bug?

Only if you can provide substantially more details than you have so far. Meaning, the exact command that you entered, and exactly what constituted failure. Also any error messages seen, with precise wording.
