Can anyone provide any guidance on how to fix a problem I've having with VirtualBox (4.3.8 r92456) running an XPPro virtual machine on an XPPro Host.
Everything works fine after the host system is started up. I can open and use the VM with network connectivity.
However, if I close the VM, the VBox adapter loses it's IP address and shows the "no connectivity message". The IP of the VBox adapter reverts to the a number typical of NICs which cannot acquire an IP: 169.x.x.x
The only way to get the VM working again is to restart the system.
Thanks.
If it matters this problem is happening on a Dell notebook.

Charles

Re: VBox Host Adapter losing IP after VM Shutdown
What is the "VBox host adapter"? If you mean the host-only adapter, it can only talk to VMs, so if it has no VMs to talk to why would you expect it to maintain an open interface?
If it's just the notification that's bothering you, you can turn that off in Windows network config.

Thanks for the reply.mpack wrote:What is the "VBox host adapter"? If you mean the host-only adapter, it can only talk to VMs, so if it has no VMs to talk to why would you expect it to maintain an open interface?

The problem is that the XP VM cannot be (re)opened until the host system is restarted. I assumed this was related to the host-only adapter message.

Ok, so you're saying you have XP VM that won't start? In that case post a VM log file for a session which shows the problem. Minimum information needed for assistance.

I don't have access to the Dell notebook at the moment but will post the log file when I do.mpack wrote:Ok, so you're saying you have XP VM that won't start? In that case post a VM log file for a session which shows the problem. Minimum information needed for assistance.
FYI, on a Lenovo notebook running XPPro, I have no problems repeatedly opening and closing the same XPPro VM running on the Dell VM without restarting the host system. On the Lenovo notebook, the VBox host-only adapter retains its IP address even when and if the XPro VM is shutdown.
One difference between the two host machines is that the Lenovo is running VBox v4.2.18 r88780 while the Dell is running VBox v4.3.8 r92456.exe.
I might downgrade the version of VBox running on the Dell to the one running on the Lenovo and see if this "fixes" the problem.
