VirtualBox installaton error: VERR_VMX_NO_VMX

Post by sfm »

Trying to install VirtualBox on a Win Server via remote desktop to the server elsewhere in the city.. All went well expanding and installing until I tried to start BigDataLite-2.4.1 and I get the error, VERR_VMX_NO_VMX, "VT-x is not available". I have not done anything with the BIOS relative to configuring anything (it's 40 miles from me). Is this a BIOS thing or is there something else?

The message means that the VM requires VT-x, but VT-x isn't available on that CPU. I can't tell you anything else without a VM log file: Minimum information needed for assistance.

Ok, I didn't get specific on OS, the machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. The log file is attached.

VBox.log wrote: 00:00:01.384278 Guest OS type: 'Oracle_64'
00:00:01.391057 WARNING! 64-bit guest type selected but the host CPU does NOT support HW virtualization.
Unfortunately it looks like the devteam have changed the logging feature: it says that this CPU doesn't support VT-x, but doesn't say what the CPU is, so I can't double check.

When is the exact CPU model number/name? With that you can Google for whether that CPU supports VT-x. If it doesn't then you can't run 64bit VMs.

Well, the processor is a Intel Xeon (Nocona) 3.20GHz which according to Intel, I think, does not support VT-x. What are my options, now?

If the CPU doesn't support VT-x then you can only run 32bit VMs, and you can't run Win8 or Win2K12 (Server) at all.

I don't expect to run either Win8 or Win2012 for the foreseeable future. I am happy with the Win 2008 R2 already running there for my windows experience. I just want a virtual Linux box on this machine. Will this be possible?

Only if you install 32-bit versions of Linux.

Boy is this getting complicated. I was just dummying along with Oracle's BigDataLite trying to get up to speed. I ran into this when I tried to install and run BigDataLite-2.4.1.ova which appears to have Oracle Linux in it apparently 64 bit. I wonder if there may be a 32 bit version of this? I was planning on installing Oracle 12c on this Linux virt. machine. I wonder also if there is a 32 bit version of this Oracle?

Yes they have 32-bit Oracle Linux available for download, but I don't know about vmdk images. You can always download the base and the package you want and install them yourself.

I think our idea of working this server into a new dev machine won't work. Bummer. Consider this solved. :(
