[Solved] Cannot update 8.0 guest to 8.1

Virtual Box 4.3.8 with extension pack installed.
2D and 3D accelerations enabled on the guest as well as PAE/NX. Guest additions installed.
Windows 7 64-bit host, fully up-to-date

I have successfully installed a Windows 8.0 64-bit guest. I cannot update it to 8.1: I get the message that my CPU is not supported. I did run the 8.1 preview successfully on the same host. When I run the Windows 8.1 upgrade assistant on the host, it does not detect any incompatibilities.

Please advise.

Change the guest type (Version) in the VM settings to "Win 8.1 (64bit)".

The template isn't always important, but Win 8.1 has unusual hardware requirements - and different from 8.0.
