Bridged networking fail - No IP - Win7 host - Ubuntu guest

Hi,

I run Windows 7 host machine with a Ubuntu 12.04 guest OS, I have set the network setting to Bridged.

In Ubuntu I get no IP address. I am suspicious about that lspci in guest OS doesn't show the name listed in "Description" from "ipconfig /all" on the host machine. Is this normal? How do I rectify it?

Code: Select all

 ipconfig /all (Windows 7)
 Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

 Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : HAS_VALUE
Getting stuff from the guest is harder because I don't have root access so I can't install the guest additions so I can copy paste from guest to host (or if anyone knows how to do this I am grateful for any help)

Code: Select all

ifconfig says
"UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST"
HWaddr 08:00:27:d3:66:ed

Code: Select all

lspci

00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82540EM GIgabit Ethernet Controller
My own theory of the Ethernet adapter being wrong was incorrect :( checking on another host machine (also Win7) with a different Ethernet adapter listed by ipconfig /all still shows up that same adapter in VirtualBox, so that adapter is something that is installed by Oracle.

So it seems that DHCP fails somehow. Will look into the message logs for dhcp tomorrow.
