VBox 4.3.8 install on Mavericks 10.9.2 Fails + breaks 4.3.6

Since 4.3.6 was buggy and forced me to restart every time I wanted to kill off my VM's with bridged connections, I saw this was now fixed in 4.3.8 according to the changelog.
I recently upgraded to OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 from 10.9.1.

When trying to install VirtualBox 4.3.8 it failed first time! It also screwed over my existing VirtualBox 4.3.6 installation and I now receive the message:
You can’t open the application “VirtualBox.app” because it may be damaged or incomplete.

Watch out for this one, save the pain and don't bother installing this 4.3.8!

When attempting to run the uninstall script, I then received the following error:

Code: Select all

unloading org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB
(kernel) Can't unload kext org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB; classes have instances:
(kernel) Kext org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB class org_virtualbox_VBoxUSB has 1 instance.

User Manual, Chapter 2.2: Installing on Mac OS X hosts. It contains paragraph 2.2.2 Uninstallation. Make sure VirtualBox or any VMs are not running when you try to uninstall it.

Thats the first thing I did, however, due to the bugs in the previous version (VMs with bridged connections refuse to completely shutdown), it wouldn't shut down ! So yes, instead of a seamless upgrade, I had to completely uninstall and reinstall it.

Hi
I have been having the same problem after I updated to OSX 10.9.2.
I resolved the problem and am now running VB 4.3.10. Here is what I did and I hope this helps:
1 set my system preferences>security & privacy> allow apple downloaded from anywhere (it seems the default is from the app store)
2 uninstalled my original VB by using the uninstal tool in the VirtualBox-4.3.10-93012-OSX package
3 restarted my computer
4 installed VB 4.3.10
5 downloaded and installed Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.10-93012

Voila...success.

Oh ya, and my original machines and clones are still intact. (Phew!)
Hope this helps.
See ya

No

This is just another rehash of
  1. Apple stopped using StartUpItems folder
  2. VirtualBox got caught not prepared - not reacting in timely manner to deprecation notice

No, it's not. This was resolved in version 4.3.2 and the OP had 4.3.6. His problem was clearly stated in the error output:
nphilly wrote:Failed to unload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv - (libkern/kext) kext is in use or retained (cannot unload).
which translates to "something is using VBoxDrv, quit it before uninstalling".

On the other hand "Laurelridley" had a different issue altogether...
