meta key in Ubuntu 12.04

Hi all,
Running Ubuntu 12.04 in Virtualbox on a MacBook Pro. There's a Python IDE called Pycharm, and in the menus it's asking for the "meta"-key, and previously when I went to Keyboard -> Layout Settings in System Settings, I was able to add the English (Macintosh) keyboard, and the previewed layout corresponded to my MacBook. From there, it appeared the Meta L key and the Alt L key were mapped to the same key, the Alt/Option key on my MacBook. However from within Pycharm, it's clear that the Alt/Option key is mapped to the Alt key in the app. Where is the meta key then? Ctrl was mapped to ctrl, and command L is mapped to nothing. (command R to "Super R" - search). The right alt/option key is mapped to "Level 3". I cannot find anything that functions as the "meta" key is supposed to inside Pycharm. The meta-key is a modifier key like Ctrl or Command. And now when I go to Keyboard layouts, for some reason the English (Macintosh) layout only looks just like the English (US) layout, which does _not_ show my MacBook keyboard key-for-key. Not sure what happened there.
Thanks!
Thomas
