New 4.3.8 now my VM crashes, help !

Hi,

I was happy with version 4.3.6-91406 running on XP Pro SP3. Two days ago, when I saw the changelog for the new 4.3.8, I did as usual (and expected): download and install.

But there were small problems. Downloading from the Virtualbox's web site was impossible (I should have given up at this point, but there are lot of fixes in 4.3.8 so I insisted.), I had to do it from softpedia. Then I found the installation to be a bit longer than usual, but this is subjective.

I have an XP Pro SP3 VM. The first thing that made the VM crash is that 4.3.8 complained about the 2nd network card, bridged to my wireless 4965 AGN card. So, I uncheched the box and restarted the VM. So far so good, it was OK. When finished, I shutdown the VM normally.

Yesterday, I tried to start the VM again. No luck, it crashed. After several attempts, I tried to boot on safe mode using F8. the drivers load, then the VM crashes.

I reverted to 4.36 but to no avail. The VM still crashes. What went wrong ? How to fix ?

I have another VM with Win7, it starts normally under 4.3.6 (even after the revert).

Thanks in advance for your wise advices.

I decided to check the configuration of the other VMs. Then I noticed that my XP VM has a SATA HDD controller. Why would have created it if for no use? So, I moved the .vdi to the SATA controller, and voila! It works.

So, if you upgrade from 4.3.6 to 4.3.8 and the VM cannot start normally : check whether the 4.3.8 hasn't viciously modified the VM configuration.

I should probably file a bug report.

Case closed.

You have left out all important details, e.g. error messages, so no-one can help you.

I'm not sure what point you're making about the SATA controller. VirtualBox doesn't include a SATA controller in its XP template, you must have added that yourself. Nor would VirtualBox move a drive from one controller to another.
