Can't choose Ubuntu 64 bit

Post by imoe »

Hi,
I'm trying to get QIIME working in VirtualBox.
I have to choose Linux as OS and
Ubuntu 64 bit as version. But all the versions I can choose from are 32 bit.
How can I make Ubuntu 64 bit an option?
Thanks for your help!

  • 64-bit guests need hardware virtualization enabled in the host's BIOS (which means that you have to enable VT-x/AMD-V in your BIOS). Look at your user-manual for your specific model on how to do this.
  • If another virtualization program is running and not "cooperating" you must disable it or uninstall it (see example below).
  • If running Windows as host you must make sure Hyper-V or XP-mode is not enabled on the host.

I don't have Windows, but you can search the internet for a solution?

I'm trying to download hyper-v manager for windows 7 now in order to
disable it.
Do you think that once it is disabled the 64 bit will be optional in VirtualBox?

Thanks(:

I think you're going in the wrong direction. From a quick search, Hyper-V Manager manages an existing Hyper-V installation, it does not enable/disable it. From what I've read, you have to disable Hyper-V in the Windows Features (Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features or or off, Hyper-V).

I tried that, but there is nothing called "Hyper-V" that can be turned on or off :)
Does that mean that's not the problem here?

Now I have unhooked XPS. Do I have to download VirtualBox again in order to get the 64 bit alternative?

Thank you so much for helping me!

I also enabled something in my BIOS.

Big question is, do I have to download VB again in order to get the 64 bit options ;) ?

OK, you need to re-read my first answer and make sure that all the requirements are met. If it still does not work, we take it from there.

Yup, I checked those already:
I'm not running another virt. program.
Hyper-V was not an option to either disable or enable but I disabled XPS Sevices and XPS Viewer.
I entered my BIOS but didn't find anything called VT-x or AMD-V.
