windows 8.1 x64 Guest fails on Windows 7 + 8.1 x64 Host

Post by rindi1 »

Hi,

I have this strange problem on a PC with intel p965/g965 chipset, e5400 Dual Core CPU and 4GB RAM (Virtualization is enabled in the BIOS). I've tried it with both, Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit), and Windows 8.1 Pro (64bit), as hosts, both of those OS's run fine. VirtualBox Version 4.3.6 r91406 is installed under both of those OS (I can't use the newer version as that has a bug when running 64 bit Windows OS's).

When trying to run a Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit guest which runs fine on 2 other PC's one with an AMD X2 Processor, and the other a e6400 cpu and 945p chipset, but the same OS's as hosts, I get an error like this:

Your PC needs to restart.....
Error Code xC4
91
0f
0xfffff8021f354a80
0

The same thing happens when installing a fresh 8.1 guest, and it happens under both hosts.

But if I install OpenSUSE (the newest version, along with the VirtualBox version that comes with the OpenSUSE repositories, something around version 4.2) on this PC, those Guests run fine.

Is there an issue with VirtualBox running within Windows hosts on an intel 965 chipset?

e5400

e6400

As you can see the difference is the e5400 does not support hardware virtualization and the e6400 does. This will make it difficult to run some guests, with Win 8 being one of them

I had the e6400 in that PC first, and the issue was the same. Besides, I don't understand why it works under Linux. When I run gtopala's SIW utility, it tells me Virtual Technologies enable for the CPU, and Speccy also tells me Virtualization is supported and enabled. In the ARK Link you it say under "VT-x" - "See ordering info", so maybe there are E5400 with VT-x available, and others without it.

Provide a specific log file for any scenario/combination you wish to discuss. See Minimum information needed for assistance.

You have the following in your log:
00:00:56.818321 !! Guru Meditation 1155 (VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT)
For Guru Meditation errors, you should head to the bugtracker and either search for an appropriate bug where you'll attach your logs and other vital information, or open a new bug report.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

"Some logs" is not very informative. Post one log per scenario, and say what you think the scenario is.

I also see this in the log you posted, though I don't know if it matters.

Code: Select all

00:00:03.693280 CPUM: WARNING! Can't turn on NX/XD when the host doesn't support it!
I think the E5400 was a transitional part, so it supports some modern features, not others. I'd be wary about this CPU.

I've added to an existing bug report. But as I mentioned before, I fail to see why it works without problem if the same hardware is running Linux as Hosting OS to VirtualBox.

Well, you are not a VBox dev, and neither are we (most of us anyway), so that probably isn't a fruitful topic of conversation.
