640x480 only pre guest additions (resolved)

I don't know if this is a VB issue or an Xubuntu 14.04 Beta 1 issue but after installing Xubuntu it booted to a 640x480 screen size with no option for anything bigger. Once the GAs are installed it's fine but it makes it hard to install anything beforehand. Just thought I would mention it. VB 4.3.8

I have no particular knowledge of XUbuntu, but it sounds standard. With no graphics drivers installed it falls back on VGA. Windows guests are the same, except since XP (not sure about earlier NT releases) the fallback is SVGA - as seen in safe mode.

I don't remember any guest opening that small. I thought it might have to do with the missing environmental variables in 4.3.8 people have mentioned. You could be right but I seem to remember guests opening at 800x600 or 1024x768. Usually there is an option in the guests to select other sizes up to 1024x762. I'll try another guest.

On reflection I realized what happened. The vast majority of Linux guests I've installed came with two files pre-installed. X11 drivers for the VirtualBox Mouse and graphics driver, which have to be removed before installing the guest additions. Apparently they are not included in the 14.04 Beta 1 release. Hence the small screen.
