4.3.8 upgrade 8.1 host Ubuntu12.04 guest

Post by raananb »

Lovely software...

Upgraded to 4.3.8 from the earlier version on 8.1 host with Ubuntu 12.04 guest, and Ubuntu opened up with no menus, no icons and no way to do anything.

Deleted Ubuntu 12.04 and reinstalled it. Installed 4.3.8 Guest additions. Reinstalled apps.

I used Shared files option in VBOX for folder D:\ProjectDB, with Automount & full access rights. This worked in the earlier version, but now, with sf_ProjectDB well in /media, I am getting "You do not have the necessary permission to view the contents of the "sf_ProjectDB"

A painful upgrade, and I have no idea how to overcome this restriction.

You need to be a member of the "vboxsf" group for automount to work properly. Check the note on Chapter 4.3.2.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

In a guests terminal run this:

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -aG vboxsf <your username>
Replace <your username> with the name you use to log in. Type your user password when prompted.

Be sure to log off and back in to finalize the change in permissions. Actually since this is low level it wouldn't hurt to actually reboot the guest.

Thanks, this solved the problem.

Since Shared Folders are useless without this step, adding the user to the vboxsf grooup should be integrated into the Shared Folders procedure.
