Can't tnsping between hosts

Post by Fully »

Used VMWare Fusion for years but have started using Virtualbox on my mac for many reasons primarily because it is so much easier to create multiple shareable hard discs for practicing RAC installations. Firstly there is the problem about using a bridged adaptor instead of NAT on a macbook pro seen loads of posts on that but none that seem to have solved it.

Anyway to get onto my main problem I want to be able to use Virtualbox instead of VMWare Fusion for my Data Guard and RAC labs. I have one major problem though. When using an internal adaptor I can't get tnsping between virtualbox vm's. I can ssh, ping and scp but tnsping between oracle instances wont work. Ok so many will be thinking it's my tnsnames.ora or listener.ora file that is not right but I've testing that to death. As an example of testing it to death I did a data pump export of both databases and then loaded them into two vm's I'd created in in Fusion. I then copied and pasted both tnsnames.ora and listener.ora and it worked perfectly on my Fusion setup.

here's the tnsping on my mac using VMWare Fusion after copying the tnsnames.ora and listener.ora across and building database from a data pump export (In other words an exact duplication):

[oracle@db1 ~]$ tnsping fully2

TNS Ping Utility for Linux: Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production on 02-MAR-2014 21:06:06

Copyright (c) 1997, 2009, Oracle. All rights reserved.

Used parameter files:

Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = db2)(PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = fully2)))
OK (10 msec)
[oracle@db1 ~]$

With exact duplication etc the only thing that could be causing the problem is a mistake in the host names but then ssh, scp and ping wouldn't work but they do everything is identical on both Virtualbox and VMWare Fusion. The only thing left is that one internal adaptor is Virtualbox's and one is VMWare Fusion's.

Oh yes and nearly forgot for those who are wondering why I don't just use VMWare Fusion the fact is that although it is a great product it is not fun creating shareable external storage for RAC labs and Virtualbox makes it so easy to create external shared storage for RAC labs and I set up a lot of RAC and Data Guard labs.

Thanks in advance,
