[solved] Gentoo64 doesn´t start in 4.3.8

Post by ManfredB »

Hello friends of VirtualBox.

I installed Gentoo 64bit in VirtualBox-4.3.6 (a new installation also in 4.3.8).

But Gentoo doesn´t boot, CPU 100%, but nothing goes on. In 4.3.6 no problems.

What is the reason for that?

I cannot post any log therefore.

Has anyone an idea, what I can do to boot Gentoo in 4.3.8?

Manfred

Was the guest shut down ( not saved state ) when you upgraded?

Yes, the guest was down.

I close all VBox-guests, before I upgrade VirtualBox.

Without any diagnostic it will be all but impossible to troubleshoot. Why can't there be a log file?

I have what may be the same problem, on both 64-bit and 32-bit, with a variety of 3.12/3.13 kernels. I've tried with and without the extension pack, and also tried changing the chipset from PIIX3 to ICH9 (well, it was the only thing I could think of...).

I get a kernel panic:

Code: Select all

The log file from a 64-bit boot, without the extension pack, is attached. Note that it boots quickly to the kernel panic, and then 55 minutes later I closed the VM.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide.

Thanks,
Rob.

What are these?

Code: Select all

00:00:00.395484 File system of 'W:\VMShared\projects.vdi' is ntfs
00:00:00.397024 File system of 'W:\VMShared\swap.vdi' is ntfs
00:00:00.398698 File system of 'W:\OSX\mountainlion.vdi' is ntfs

Oh, just collections of random junk ;-) The projects vdi is shared with my 32-bit VM. In case you're interested, the type identification is wrong: projects.vdi is ext4, swap.vdi is Linux swap, and mountainlion.vdi is some fruity Californian thing...

I tried again with just the single root vdi and it made no difference.

(Edit: perhaps the 'ntfs' refers to the file system containing the vdi files, in which case it's completely right)

So if I understand this correctly it did work in a previous version. If that is the case you might want to create a ticket at bugtracker and include as Much information as you can so the DEVs can look into it.

Under /Gentoo2014/logs I found one log.

You can it see under attachment.

Manfred

P.S. My host is Linux (PCLinuxOS 64bit). Kernel of Gentoo is 3.12.11.

You should go ahead and post this information in the ticket above as well.

Yesterday I could install Gentoo in VirtualBox-4.3.8 with the kernel-config of the live-cd (kernel 3.10.25).
I could not understand the possibiblity to start a livecd, but after installing gentoo no booting.

The only reason is the kernel-config.

Now I can use gentoo64bit in VirtualBox-4.3.8.
