Ive never had an issue with vbox until now. After updating to 4.3.8 and installing the guest additions the only way im able to use my guest Ubuntu is through tty terminal. I get a lightdm failed to start error and if i switch to gdm display manager which i just installed to see if this would bring back my normal gui desktop, then I get stuck in the Ubuntu splash screen loop. I tried to rollback to 4.3.6 but the ga that are installed are still 4.3.8 and I dont know how to install the 4.3.6 ga to see if this could fix my issue. I installed another display manager called 'slim' but I would rather not use this as im not a fan of it but it did bring up the Ubuntu gui. I dont even know what else to do to fix this issue. I would appreciate help as this started yesterday and I use vbox and ubuntu exclusively for Rails development. Im 2 days behind on work. Please help.

Don't know if this can solve your issue? But I've never had any problems neither with VBox updates before. I have 6 Windows VM's and 2 Linux.

But from 4.3.6 to 4.3.8, with Ubuntu only, the VM would not even start, VBox would simply crash. All I did is simply went into the Ubuntu VM machine and unchecked "Enable 3D Acceleration" in the "Display" section. I was able to update the additions and everything is back to normal. Go figure!

Hope this helps!

Ive previously had that unchecked. I completely did a reinstall of 4.3.6 then installed 'slim' display manager which got me back into the gui. From there I installed the 4.3.6 ga by force unmounting the 4.3.8 iso, then selecting lightdm again and all worked like normal again.

Disabling 3D acceleration worked for me too. Also fixed some other window issues when in fullscreen, like accessing the VBOX menu bar when set to auto-hide.
