64 bit computer & virtualbox but only gives me 32bit options

I am running a confirmed 64 bit satellite with Ubuntu 12.04 lts amd 64. I went to oracles site and downloaded the latest version of virtualbox for ubuntu 12.04 lts amd64. I was having an issue with linux lite and I was trying to figure out if it was the download first. Since lite runs off the same stuff as Ubuntu I wanted to see if my Ubuntu cd would work because I knew it was a good copy. Well my original download from software center wasn't the newsest and possible only a 32 bit machine so that is why I got the new installer from the site. Well when I first go to set up 64 bit ubuntu now it still doesn't give me the 64 bit option. Every Os option, windows, mac, linux, etc. are all 32 bit. It doesnt give me the 64 bit option like I see in pictures. I even tried to go on with installation of ubuntu and see if I could change the processor count but it wont let me. Im okay with computers but Im no wiz and Ive only had linux for a few months at most. This is the first time I've used a virtual machine also. Can anyone be of assistance?

1) 64-bit guests need hardware-virtualzation enabled in the hosts bios.
2) when creating the 64-bit guest you must select 64-bit in General -> Basic -> version.
3) If running Windows as host you must make sure hyper-v or xp mode is not enabled on the host. MS does not play well and wants it all.

It took me some time thinking about this because there really is a lot I don't understand. I found what you were talking about and I did all that a long time ago. 64 bit is not an option on any of those versions. They all say 32 bit. I know for a fact that I have a 64 bit processor, I am running my computer on 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 and I checked, and also that means I am not using windows. Any other suggestions? Ive seen in videos where It might say version-Ubuntu(64 bit) but my virtualbox doesnt say 64 for any of them. It is always (32 bit). Also I checked several times and I downloaded the 64 bit version of virtualbox. Anytime I create a new vbox operating system am I considered a guest?

So you at least got me thinking outside the virtualbox with the remark about windows not giving up the dual processor. I got to checking into my issue for something else limiting the vbox. Well even though my computer is 64 bit it is an intel 2duo t6400 and those cpu's do not support virtualization. Now I know

Start a new topic and provide a VM log file from any VM on that host. Minimum information needed for assistance.

Hi. I have this similar challenge and this is the way i solved it below:

What happens is that: The guest is trying to switch to the PAE mode which is currently disabled by default in VirtualBox.

Solution is here: Select the VM, click on Machine → Settings, select System → Processor and check "Enable PAE/NX

This steps above solved it permanently.

Hope this helps. :)

Well yes, it's a good idea to enable those features which a particular guest OS will want to use: simply choosing the correct guest template will usually ensure that. However PAE has nothing to do with the discussion above. The above problem can't be fixed by any VirtualBox settings tweak, as the issue is with the host as already discussed (see Perry's first reply).

I don't think anyone ever really gave a concrete answer to this question. I had the same issue. What you need to do is go into your BIOS settings and enable VIRTUALIZATION. That "fixed" it for me - I am able to see the 64-bit options now in VB.

I am having the same problem using Ubuntu 14.04x64 host. Virtualbox version 4.3.12 r93733. When I try to add a new guest Virtualbox ony offers me 32 bit options for the guest. I have tried Ubuntu repository version and downoaded Oracle's version.
Why is this?

For the same reason as mentioned above. Either hardware vitualization, VT-x/AMD-D ia turned off in your BIOS or your CPU doesn't support it.

I'm going to lock this thread, since it just seems to be attracting the guys who see the title but don't bother to read the posts.

Read Perry's first reply - your answer is right there.
