Check and repair disk errors on the host, then restore the damaged file(s) from a backup.

At what point does this message appear, i.e. does the XP guest boot up?

I'm not sure I can put it any simpler. If the VDI has been corrupted then there is no magic cure. You must replace it using a backup copy you made some time - hopefully recently.

And no, "System Restore" is not useful for this since it only protects the system (OS).
