Running Snow Leopard on Mavericks in VBox

Post by Sims1 »

Hi. I am a new poster - and have searched all over the internet for this question and found nothing. I currently run a MacBook Pro (which came with 10.8 installed). I recently upgraded to Mavericks - running an i5. I want to install an iso file of Snow Leopard on Virtual Box - but am having trouble. I can get Snow Leopard to install in Virtual Box, but can get no further. I was just wondering if it's even possible to have Snow Leopard and Mavericks running on the same machine? Thanks!

How far do you want to go after you installed it?

Hi,
I am not the original poster but I may have a very similar problem.
I installed Mac OS X 10.6.0 on VirtualBox 4.3.4 for Mac (Host OS X 10.9.1).
This VM booted and ran.
On the guest, I then applied Apple's 1 GB consolidated upgrade from Software Update to bring the VM up to the current 10.6. Also on the host I upgraded VirtualBox to 4.3.6. On rebooting, it fails and enters Guru Meditation mode. My log file is attached here.

Okay, so I finally got Snow Leopard 6.3 to boot up in VirutalBox via a Snow Leopard ISO. Now my problem is when I insert The Sims Complete Collection into my Mavericks CD Drive - how do I get it to show up in my Snow Leopard Virtual environment so I can install it?

First of all, I highly doubt that the Sims will work in a virtual machine. But, on the bottom of the window there's a CD icon. Click and select "Host Drive..."

Do you think I can download an iso of the the original sims only and run on the virtual machine and it may work? If not, what is your best suggestion? As far as I can imagine it's just buying an old mac that will run it, but I don't really want to drop a couple hundred dollars for the Sims.

I wouldn't know what to tell you. I don't even know the requirements for the Sims. I thought you already had the CD though...

The system requirements for The Sims are all met inside of my virtual machine (running snow leopard 10.6.3). I do have the Sims Complete Collection CD, but can't get it to show up in the virtual environment. I thought maybe converting the Sims CD to an .iso and loading it would work but I just got a binary file error when I tried to open it up.

If I'm correct - you need to use to use Shared Folders through Guest Additions to attach your virtual environment to the hosts CD/DVD Drive. However when I do this I get this error "The VirtualBox Guest Additions do not appear to be available on this virtual machine and shared folders cannot be used without them. To use shared folders inside the virtual machine, please install the Guest Additions if they are not installed, or re-install them if they are not working corrrectly, by selecting Insert Guest Additions CD Image from the Devices menu. If they are installed but the machine is not yet fully started then shared folders will be available once it is."

However, hen I follow those instructions I get another error "Unable to insert the virtual optical disk /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso into the machine Leopard. Would you like to try to force insertion of this disk? Could not mount the media/drive '/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED). The details go on to say "Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005).

Any help on getting Guest Additions installed correctly, so I can run discs from my host computers CD/DVD drive inside of the virtual environment would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much!

PS: I might bump this to a new post since I originally just wanted to know if I could run Snow Leopard in Mavericks.

1) There are no Guest Additions for the Mac.
2) You don't need shared folders.
3) Go in the VM Settings -> Storage. Select the CD on the left and click on the CD icon on the right (see image below) and select "Host Drive..."
4) I already told you about that 2 posts ago.

Hi Sims1,

I'm looking at using Virtual Box to run Snow Leopard on a new Mac running Mavericks so that I can continue using Final Cut Express, I was very interested in reading your post. Were you able to get the Sims working? Have you tried any other old software?

Thanks.
