Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Hello all,
I'm using VirtualBox on a brand new iMac I got from Apple a few weeks ago - all original hardware, nothing added - with OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) pre-installed, and I'm getting a lot of system crashes, like one each day. I posted a request for help on the Apple discussion forums, but of course, as soon as they saw I had installed kernel modules other than the Apple ones, they told me they had to be the culprits. I highly doubt VirtualBox can be the cause of the issues, but I thought I'd ask anyway to be absolutely sure: does anyone have issues like this? I'm not using VirtualBox all the time but I do have a couple of Linux VMs and a Windows that I launch occasionally.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Not really much information for us to go on. Minimum information needed for assistance.
What version of VirtualBox are you using? Have you checked your Console logs to see if they point to a possible cause?

What do you mean by crashes? Kernel panics? Application crashes? VirtualBox crashes? VirtualMachine(s) crashes?EricBrunel wrote:I'm getting a lot of system crashes, like one each day.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Sorry for that, I've been a bit quick to post indeed. I'm using VirtualBox 4.3.6 r91406 which is the latest version as far as I know. And I'm getting kernel panics on the Mac, so on the host, not the VM.
I did have a look at the Console, but the information given for the crashes aren't really significant for me. Here is a typical example:
I did have one that appeared related to VirtualBox though, but again, not sure about how to interpret what it says:

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Were you running VBox at the time the kernel panics occurred? What other things consistently trigger those panics? Remember that if people can't reproduce it, they can't address it.
Here's what I would do, since this is a brand new system and you might have a bad hardware.
- Uninstall VirtualBox and the IPSecuritas from Lobotomo.
- Try using your computer. I would focus on graphics intensive apps since the 1st kernel panic references your GPU.

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Sometimes VirtualBox was running, sometimes not. And there's nothing triggering the crashes in a reproductible way, it seems to be completely random.socratis wrote:Were you running VBox at the time the kernel panics occurred? Let me emphasize what I said in my initial post: I don't think the problem comes from VirtualBox at all. I was just asking if anybody had the same issue. I would be much less surprised if the module causing the problem was IPSecuritas.
I'm working on being able to do that. But for now, I need IPSecuritas to be able to check out a license of a product I'm using all the time on one of my company's servers. If I can't use this product, I can't work normally. So if a crash happens, it might not be caused by the same thing, and if no crash happens, it wouldn't mean a lot. Here's what I would do, since this is a brand new system and you might have a bad hardware.

Those "random" KPs are the worst. That's why I said I suspect something wrong with your hardware. Have you tried the Apple hardware diagnostics on your system? The extended version. It might take a couple of hours (depending on RAM) but it's the first thing I do on any new Mac that I get.
Good luck...

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
I did run the Apple hardware diagnostics tool, the one you get by pressing 'D' when the Mac boots, but I guess it was only the basic version. I didn't see any option to get an extended one. And it didn't report any issue.socratis wrote:Those "random" KPs are the worst. That's why I said I suspect something wrong with your hardware. How can I get this extended version? The page about the diagnostics in the Apple knowledge base (the forum won't let me post its address it seems…) does talk about the 'basic diagnostics', but says nothing about extended ones…

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
The latest available Mac that I have is from 2011 with no built-in diagnostics, but from the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) disk. It had a short and an extended version. Maybe things have changed. Chances are they have.

Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.7 or later
- Press the power button to turn on your computer.
- Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears.
- It takes a minute or so for AHT to start up and inspect your hardware configuration. While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen.
- When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren't using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
- The AHT console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Note: Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.- To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
This pages starts with: "Important: If your Mac was released after June 2013, you will use Apple Diagnostics rather than Apple Hardware Test (AHT)". My Mac is brand new, when I press 'D' at startup, I'm getting Apple Diagnostics, not AHT. And it seems the Apple Diagnostics do not have an extended option anymore, or I haven't found it.rpmurray wrote:Using Apple Hardware Test

Yep, Sorry. I really should learn to read the whole article before I post.
Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
I am having the same problem. The macintosh is brand new iMac and latest 4.3.8 r92456.
Nothing was reported by Apple Diagnostics.
The system crash occurs only when virtual host is under heavy load.
Under load the virtual host generates disk load through Shared Foldes to local ssd disk.

Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Maybe not the same issue… The kernel panics I'm getting aren't always triggered by anything happening in VirtualBox. Sometimes, VirtualBox hasn't even been launched since the last time the Mac rebooted, and I'm getting KPs anyway…timos wrote:I am having the same problem. Re: Frequent system crashes on Mac using VirtualBox
Just for information: I uninstalled IPSecuritas and went for an apparently more serious solution called VPN Tracker, which explicitly claims to support Mavericks (IPSecuritas didn't). I also upgraded my system to 10.9.2, then, as advised by Apple support, did a complete reinstall of the OS using recovery via Internet. I also upgraded VirtualBox to the latest version (4.3.8 r92456). I just got a kernel panic on the Mac again…
VirtualBox was running, but it had basically been running all day, and with much more load (2 VMs running, one doing something in the background while I was using the second one, for example). When the kernel panic happened, there was a single VM running doing nothing…
If anybody has any hint or see the same kind of problem, please let me know…
