Ubuntu 12.04 running slow even with 3D accel, guest adds

Recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 8 with VB 4.2.6 and it is running unusually slow - it runs just fine on my laptop, as fast as the native Windows 8 install so this is an anomaly, considering my desktop is equipped with MUCH better hardware.
From what I've read most of the issues stem from having 3D acceleration disabled - which I've already enabled. I gave it the full 128MB of video memory, almost 10GB of RAM, and it's still rather slow. I've also checked to make sure 3D acceleration is enabled with the /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p command it all checks out. What else could be going on? At first I thought it may be the fact that I allocated the VDI to my secondary HDD, but after deleting that install and installing a fresh one on the native SSD that my host is on, it made no difference.
Here's my rough specs if it'll help:
Windows 8 64-bit (Ubuntu guest is also 64-bit)
Intel i7-2600k CPU
16GB RAM
3x NVidia GTX Titan GPU's
1400W PSU
512gb Samsung SSD
Any thoughts on what might be causing the sluggishness would be appreciated!
EDIT: Additional information:
Host: Windows 8 64-bit
Guest: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, given 10GB RAM and 128 Video Memory
VirtualBox 4.2.6
Thanks!
[FIXED] Updated VirtualBox to the latest version (4.3.6) and that sped things up quite nicely.
