Unable to install in Mavericks (OSX 10.9.1)

Downloaded 4.3.6 and after attempting to install in Mavericks (OSX 10.9.1) I get a generic error "The installation failed". Going through the logs and after running the uninstall tool I arrived at the conclusion that VirtualBox cannot unload there particular kernel extensions: org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB, and org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv.

Code: Select all

(kernel) Can't unload kext org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB; classes have instances:
(kernel) Kext org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB class org_virtualbox_VBoxUSB has 1 instance.
Failed to unload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB - (libkern/kext) kext is in use or retained (cannot unload).
(kernel) Can't remove kext org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv; services failed to terminate - 0xdc008018.
Failed to unload org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv - (libkern/kext) kext is in use or retained (cannot unload).
I tried running the uninstall tool and reinstalling the latest VirtualBox version as well as the 5 previous ones to no avail. Even rebooted between installs, but the problem remains.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would uninstall VB, then
- remove ~/Library/VirtualBox
- remove ~/Library/Preferences/org.virtualbox.*

[ that would have you re-enter the VMs from the VB interface, later on - which is not a big deal, as VB is well made and particular config is stored within the VM, not in external options ]

Also, Mac is pretty picky in terms of ACL (this is a good thing, the bad is that for some reasons the ACL are not always set correctly or change)
- open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app
- select the disk you are interested in
- do "Repair Disk Permissions"

Check also you remaining disk space.

Reinstall VB.
