Failed to load unit 'HGCM' fixing shared folders did no help

I'm hitting the error
Failed to load unit 'HGCM' (VERR_INVALID_PARAMETER)
and after looking at previous posts I tried removing the shared folder I had (while virtualbox was not running) so now I have:
<SharedFolders/>
but I still get the same error
anyone know what the issue is or how to fix?
I'm running VirtualBox VM 4.3.6 r91406 win.amd64 on windows 8.1 Pro
