Basics on installing Linux Mint as guest

Hi

I run Virtualbox 4.3.6 since many years on my MBP under Maverikcs.
Now I also want to try a VM with Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-bit and downloaded the iso.file that I understand function as a live-DVD.

I configure the VM (and choose Ubuntu 64-bit) with 2GB RAM and I choose the iso-file on the Mac as boot-disk.
The Mint starts up and within Mint I can choose to install Mint on the machine.
Is that what I should do?

I just had a vague feeling that it may actually install Mint and replace Mac which I do not want.
Just want it to install in my VM.

So first I am uncertain about how to install the OS in a VM although I have read in the manual.
In some recent posts I also see that people have problem with installing Mint 16 Cinnamon but
hard to see if it applies to me.

Thanks

Jan Peter

Mac details:
Model late 2008
OS X 10.9.1
Graphics card NVIDIA 9400M optional
RAM 8 GB

If the install prompt appears in the VM window, then yes you are inside the VM and you are safe to continue.

Good. Works fine!

When I installed the Guest additions I got a strange message though
"...You appear to have a version of the VBoxGuestAddtions software
on your system which was installed from a different source using a
different type of installer. If you installed it from a package from your
Linux distribution or if it is a default part of the system then we strongly
recommend that you cancel this installation and remove it properly
before installing this version. If this is simply an older or damaged
installation you may safely proceed."

I actually did continue and installed... and later read the text.
Now I do not know what to do really.

Seems also I have problem to start the Linux Mint VM again.

Thanks

Update. I can start up the VM with Linux Mint no problem.
But I am somewhat worried for the guest addition.

I do not at all think the guest addition came with the Mint distribution,
tend to believe it came from the Virtualbox installation.
Damaged? How do I know? Can I check it?

When I start up Linux Mint I get the information text that
"..currently running without video acceleration hardware..."
seems understandable. But I feel that the moving around a window
or similar is somewhat slower than in Windows XP.

Does guest addition provide help for video acceleration
and is something not working here?

Also at time of installation I need to choose what kind of Linux I was
about to install. I choose Ubuntu (64) since Mint is based on that.
However I could have chosen some of the Linux x/y.
See in other thread at the forum that some users have
installed using Linux x/y but they also report various
problems that I do not have.

What to do next?

Mint does in fact come with their OSE version of the guest additions. That is why you see the warning. You should remove the ones that came with the mint install before installing the ones from the VirtualBox build or leave the ones that came with the install and not install the ones from VirtualBox. They will conflict if you try to overwrite them.

Thank your for your reply.
How do I remove the guest addition that came with Mint?
Do I need to reinstall Mint Cinammon?

Thanks

Hello again,

I looked in the manual for ver 4.3.6 for how to uninstall Guest additions and found some info on page 69
but difficult to follow.

What does "...uninstall parameter from the path that...." really mean=
Also I hade problems with permissions to do anything out here....
I feel the manual is very sketchy here.

---

I also installed a new Linux Mint VM and I have not yet installed guest additions
but need to do that soon. But I do not even understand how to proceed with
a fresh installation. Also here I must un-install (or rather circumvent) guest-additions that comes with the
Linux Mint distribution, but I do not know how.

Thank you for some help

Jan Peter

Since you ask the question, this means you are not familiar with Linux and the command line so the easiest way for you is to open the Mint package manager and search for VirtualBox, and VBox. From there you can remove the Mint packages. Then you can install the ones from VirtualBox.org

True, I am not so familiar with the Linux terminal although I can do the most elementary things and like to learn more.
I guess the VBox manual assume a "certain command line maturity" and the reader must be able to fill out the blanks etc.

Anyway I identified three "things" related to VirtualBox that I removed using Synaptic Package Manager.
VirtualBox-guest-dkms
VirtualBox-guest-utils
VirtualBox-guest-x11

These could be removed.
Most other "things" I get when searching for VirtualBox or VBox and clearly related could not be removed and only installed.
Actually not very obvious which could be removed and thus installed.
After hat installation using VirtualBox routine for installation of guest-addtions

After all this shared-folder still does not work.
I get complaints that I do not have the proper permissions.
Also the folder pops up in the folder media and get a prefix sf_
Strange

I have for several years worked with Windows XP virtual machines and little problem to set up shared-folder.
And about a year ago or more I had an Ubuntu virtual machine which also handled well my shared folder for all VMs.

Something is still not right with this Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon installation I guess.
(This time I used the choice Linux 2.6/3.x 64-bit, instead of Ubuntu 64-bit although I now Mint is descendant to Ubuntu
but not clear to me how clear-cut that is and a possible error during installation).

Have you read http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.h ... mount_auto since that looks like what you have selected?
For automount to work you need to add the guests user name to the guests vboxsf group.

Thank you very much Perry!
Works fine.

For the reader with little Linux Mint experience I just want to clarify how to do what Perry said
- go to Administration/Users and Groups (from the Menu bottom left corner)
- choose the actual account that should have access to the shared folder
- click in the middle of the field Groups to the right
-- then you get a list of different Groups in the system, here you mark vboxsf

Thanks
