Why i can't increase hdd of virtualbox

I have windows 8.1 on VirtualBox with 25 gb HDD but i want to increase 50 gb but when i use the
VBoxManage modifyhd <your filename> --resize 50000
but i get an error
"Progress state: VBOX_E_NOT_SUPPORTED VBoxManage: error: Resize hard disk operation for this format is not implemented yet!"
How i can increase?
