Post by Kumar2000 »

I'm Using HP Folio 9470m
Its having window 7
Core i5 processor
Ram 8gb

Unable to install ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-amd64 on Oracle Virtualbox 4.3

Error - This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU

I have enabled the VT-x/AMD-V in the box. Enabled Virtualization technology in BIOS and VD technology also. Restarted machine and deleted the previous error box of ubuntu.

Created new with below setting
Name - Ubuntu Desktop
Type - Linux
Version - Ubuntu (note : Ubuntu (64) is not available in the dropdown list to select)
Memory - 2048mb
File allocation - 40gb
Video Memory - 128mb

and still i'm getting the same error. Anyone can help me. There is no Hyper-V in the OS for to select or not to select.

If hardware virtualization is enabled in bios then something else is using it. hyper-v is the first thing that you looked for but some virus software may also be a consideration.

Moving to Windows Hosts and this is a host issue.

1. I have checked windows features again, there is no Hyper-V option. My system is very clean with OEM antivirus, with updated engine init.

2. I doubt it is because of the iso i have, it is mentioned it is amd, and I'm using intel laptop. I will try with i86 iso and check.

Make sure VT-x is enabled in the VM settings, and that the guest version "Ubuntu (64bit)".

If the 64bit version is not available in the dropdown then it means that VT-x has not been detected. This can be for a number of reasons: e.g. you CPU doesn't support it, or it has been disabled in the BIOS, or some other VM platform (e.g. Hyper-v) has grabbed ownership of it. The latter is likely to be your problem since AFAIK Hyper-v is enabled by default on Win8.

It might also be worth your while to read the Win8 and Win8.1 stickies at the top of this forum, as all of this has been discussed many times already.
