crashes when I click in any directory button
crashes when I click in any directory button
I'm on Windows 8.1 x64
Running vbox 4.3.6r91406 (just downloaded it)
I've attached a picture of the button I'm talking about. It shows up at various times in the manager. For example, during the creation of the VM wizard. Or later during the settings configuration of the VM. Where ever I click it, the same thing happens. Windows pops up and says "Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager has stopped working" Close Program.
The only thing in the log in .VirtualBox is:
00:13:08.565614 Watcher ERROR [COM]: aRC=E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) aIID={fafa4e17-1ee2-4905-a10e-fe7c18bf5554} aComponent={VirtualBox} aText={The object is not ready}, preserve=false

Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
Rough guess at first, did you do the install with "Run as Administrator"? Seems this is necessary with Windows 7, so may be with 8, too?

Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
It seems to be necessary when the host is 64bit Windows.
Another thing to watch for in Win8-64 is Driver Signature Enforcement. This is where Windows refuses to install unsigned kernel mode drivers, likewise if the driver is signed by an untrusted authority. This service is working whether you have admin rights or not. Make sure this service is not configured to silently discard drivers. Google for details.
However, I'm not convinced this is the problem. I would suspect a deeper problem with the host.

Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
I tried to "Run as Administrator" and that failed with the same error.
I then de-installed vbox, disabled the driver signature (wow, didn't even know all those reboots via advanced setup were there!), then installed vbox again. Fails with the same error.
Now if I "Run as Administrator" it fails to run and gives this error message:
Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object.
The application will now terminate.
Callee RC: CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005)
Is this the end of the line for me? After using VirtualBox since it was Innotek I'm forced to switch to VMWare

Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
Uninstall and then delete the Oracle folder and reboot. Then install again and see if it helps.
Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
I deleted the Oracle directory (plus the .VirtualBox and Virtual VMs). Same issue remains.

Open %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml using an advanced text file editor (notepad++ or the like) and check for the line containing : GUI/RecentFolderCD
Is the path referenced there still existing?

I don't have that line at all. See attached.

Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
I just installed VMWare Player to see if it would work. It works without issue. Anyone have any other suggestions on how to fix vbox? I really don't want to use a VMWare product, but will have to if I can't get VirtualBox to work.

Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
This must be something that is unique to your machine/install. I would post a ticket at bugtracker so the DEVs can take a look. Provide as much information as you can. Be sure to post a complete log file ( as an attachment ). They are really strict about that.
Re: crashes when I click in any directory button
This is now working after updating to version 4.3.8. Thanks!
