[SOLVED] Problems with Win8 License on VM

Post by phxblt »

Hi,

I tried to install Win8 on a VM which is intended for use on serveral PCs. My License is a Win8 Enterprise.
First activation of Win8 was no problem, but if I run it from another computer, Windows tells me to activate it again. (I think because of hardware detection)

Is there any known solution for this problem instead of using Windows 7? Can Virtualbox emulate same Hardware?

Thanks in advance

How did you move the VM? If you moved the entire VM then the virtual hardware changes would have been minimal - one the CPU might change. If you built a new virtual PC around an existing virtual disk then of course that's a large number of changes.

Anyway, there's nothing unusual about WinXX detecting hardware changes and asking to be reactivated. Just do it. I assume your license allows you to have that many active copies, in which case the activation server should be happy.

Unfortunately not - the VM is installed on a USB-stick and is used on different computers.
The activation said
0xC004C020 The activation server reported that the Multiple Activation Key has exceeded its limit.
It is a simple Windows 8 Enterprise license, why do I get this error? This is my second activation.

How did you move the VM?
I'm new to virtualization, so maybe there is the mistake. I created a new VM on a virtual disk on my usb stick.
Then plugged the USB stick into another computer and selected "new" with the existing virtual disk.

Is there any other way which works?

For the correct way to move a VM, see the tutorial in the "Howtos and Tutorials" area: Howto: Move a VM.

I'm afraid you have to ask Microsoft about the details of their various licenses and activation policies.

Dear mpack,

thank you very much for your kind help!
I guess it will be better to read the Tutorials before next time.
I believe phone activation will solve my problem. (if there is no further activation necessary)
