Late 2013 MacBook Pro stuck on mounting root during Install

Apparently, OS X Mavericks is NOT supported as a guest OS on VirtualBox. Only Mac OS X Server is supported.

Hi all,

I was wondering if there's any forum members that have tried/managed to install OS X Mavericks (as a guest) on a late 2013 (Haswell) MacBook Pro, which is also running OS X Mavericks on the host. I'd appreciate it if you could share your success/failure experience.

I've just bought such a machine and so far I have failed miserably to do this. Here is my history:

1. First problem was getting install media.

Whenever I tried to download OS X Mavericks from the App Store I would get a message reading We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer."

Apparently this is because the App Store has an older version of Mavericks right now. MacBook Pros actually come with a newer (patched) version that is not yet on the App Store. I found a post that describes an elaborate trick to create an image via the Internet Recovery feature. I ended up downloading the software on a Mac Mini I had (came with Mountain Lion) and burning the installer on a USB stick (installer is version 1.3.37 (469.5).

2. VirtualBox won't boot from USB stick image

So I followed the instructions to create an ISO image using the "hidden" BaseSystem.dmg file and ended up with a 1.25GB file (BaseSystem.iso) that is basically the 477.4MB BaseSystem.dmg (the dmg is compressed) as an ISO. When I mount that ISO using Finder on my MacBook Pro, it opens up nicely and I can start the installer by double-clicking on "Install OS X Mavericks" application. The installer start ups, I verify my eligibility with Apple and all seems ok.

However, when I start VirtualBox with the ISO attached to the CD/DVD drive, the VM windows comes up blank (pitch black). The window resizes two times (as if the screen resolution is changing) and then "hangs" displaying nothing.


Has anyone ever managed to install OS X Mavericks as a guest on a late 2013 MacBook Pro?

P.S. I will post links to the references mentioned above as soon as the site lets me. So, I managed to make some progres...

I played around with the Display settings and increased the amount of video to 128MB and this fixed the blank display issue!

Now I see text from the kernel (Darwin Kernel Version 13.0.0, root:xnu-2422.1.72~6/RELEASE_X86_64).

The kernel initializes with no erros, and then get stuck as soon as root is mounted (see attached image), but then nothing happens. Any ideas what to try next?
