Pack the ".vbox" file into a .zip and attach it here. I or one of the other volunteers may be able to fix it.

Also show directory listings of the VM folder and the "Snapshots" subfolder.

It's important that the information you give me is accurate. If you don't fully understand what I'm asking for then perhaps you have a friend who reads English.

Yikes! I've never seen so many snapshots being used by a VM - this is just begging for a disaster. I hope you are not making the mistake of thinking that snapshots == backups. Quite the opposite is true.

You omitted the directory listings I asked for. The VM is trying to mount the file called "{8f8b279e-fc9f-4d41-a250-61085c6b359e}.vdi". Does this file exist in the "Snapshots" subfolder?

The VM is also trying to mount the VBoxGuestAdditons.iso, it's a common problem to have an error after upgrading VirtualBox because this file is overwritten. It is good practice to unmount this ISO immediately after use, especially for heavy snapshot users. You should try to unmount it now.

OK, two things:

- I, for one, welcome our new snapshot overlord!
- The guy who's responsible for the snapshot portion of the code should get a medal for writing such a robust piece of art!
1 level 1 snapshot
  90 level 2 snapshots
    176 level 3 snapshots
      104 level 4 snapshots
        27 level 5 snapshots
          69 level 6 snapshots
-----------------------------------
         467 snapshots

IMHO, one snapshot is one too many, so I don't want to be sidetracked by quantity. The peculiar thing is that the message says that an xml image element is missing, whereas AFAICT everything is present in the registry. I'm wondering if it really means that an image is missing, which could mean either a VDI or an ISO, so it's important to pin down if the GA's ISO has been overwritten, or if any snapshot VDI has been deleted or otherwise fubared.

Failed to open virtual machine located in /Users/socratis/Desktop/Just belive i can fly/Just belive i can fly.vbox.

Error in /Users/socratis/Desktop/Just belive i can fly/Just belive i can fly.vbox -- Required AttachedDevice/Image element is missing.

/Users/vbox/tinderbox/4.3-mac-rel/src/VBox/Main/src-server/MachineImpl.cpp[472] (nsresult Machine::initFromSettings(VirtualBox*, const com::Utf8Str&, const com::Guid*)).
I tried to "import" the same VBox and I got the same error (the one in bold). Of course I'm missing each and every snapshot, but what caught my attention was the string highlighted in red (about the Utf8Str). Could this be the source of the problem or I'm just shooting in the dark?

@mpack: Your reference to the missing "{8f8b279e..." file was just because it was the last referenced snapshot?

It's the one currently mounted in the VM, using an Image element inside an AttachedDevice element. The error message says that the AttachedDevice.Image element is missing, but in fact neither AttachedDevice element is missing the Image child and in any case you don't have to mount media in a drive, so the error itself is weird. Either the OP gave us the wrong vbox file or something else is going on.

You can try cloning the most recent snapshot VDI using CloneVDI. Make sure you turn on the "Compact" option too. This creates a new (merged) VDI which you should build a new VM around. You must not mount the clone in the original VM. Once the clone VM is tested and working you can delete the old VM. In future you should back up your VM to a second drive - avoid all use of snapshots.

I have no need of your money, but thanks for the offer. I don't use Skype.

I should warn: while CloneVDI has no explicit limit on the number of open files, it used to be the case that operating systems did. It's a long time since I heard about that being a problem, but it's something to consider.
