non vmbox / guest system connected internet

Post by keekeedee »

it seems as though i can not connect my vmbox to the internet unless my regular non vmbox windows is first connected to the internet.

is there any way that i can connect my vmbox to the internet without having to have my host windows system not online. i would rather not have my host online b/c that opens the door to someone connecting to my network and uploading a virus and then even if i am using a vm box, if there is a RAT on my host, i get the feeling that they can then see everything on the computer like the vm box....

so i would like to just have vmbox windows connected to the internet, not the host windows.

thx

If you mean that your host must be able to access the internet for your guest to do so, that is completely normal. Your guest exists inside your host and uses the host network card, so the host normally gets everything the guest needs to get.

But you can block internet access to the host and allow it to the guest by using the access restrictions in your network router. I have such a setup at home. Give the host a static IP address in your local network address range, and block that host IP address from the internet in the router's access restrictions page (see your router's instructions on how to do this).

If you using a public access point, your only remedy is through the host OS. You need to disable the protocols on the host side so that it cannot access the network, but this is tricky if you use the default (NAT) network setting.

What OS are you running on the host machine?
