Hi i am trying to install Linux mint 16 on virtualbox. The installation goes fine, but when i restart, virtualbox crashes and i don't know why.

I have tried to use the Linux 2.6/x3 (64-bit) and Ubuntu (64-bit) when creating the virtual machine, but same thing happens.
I have tried with the Enable VT-x/Amd-V checked and unchecked, but no change.

My computer has windows 7 as the base operating system.

Can somebody pleas help me?

Does VirtualBox itself crashes or the Mint guest? Take a look at the minimum information needed for assistance.

Somehow you have an earlier version of the guest additions and it is from ubuntu not VirtualBox. This would need to be removed and the guest additions from your VBox install installed instead.

Code: Select all

VirtualBox VM 4.3.6 r91406 win.amd64 (Dec 18 2013 17:12:34) release log

00:00:25.401463 Guest Additions information report: Version 4.2.16 r86992 '4.2.16_Ubuntu'
But this may cause an issue with the Cinnamon desktop. So far I have not beeen able to get Mint-16 and Cinnamon to play well with Intel HD Graphics 4000

Hi,
This seems to be a standard problem at the moment, there are lots of discussion threads listing the same effect for multiple guest OSs.
To confirm:
- you run the install correctly from a disk image file
- you are prompted to restart the OS to complete the install
- Virtualbox crashes and closes the VM

Solution is to dismount the disk image before you restart the OS. A way of doing this is:
- at the restart prompt stage take a snapshot of the current state of the VM. This allows you to return to this stage of the install process directly.
- close the VM
- remove the disk image from the Storage -> Controller: IDE section of the VM's settings.
- restore the VM from the snapshot and then click restart

Essentially you need to eject the installation CD before restarting the OS.
Hope that works

Perry, I believe all current versions of Mint come with 4.2.16 guest additions pre-installed. I just installed LM 16 with Cinnamon in VB 4.3.10 and the guest additions seemed to work okay with the exception of Auto-Mounting shared folders (I know, I know). Anyway I removed the 4.2.16 GA's and installed the 4.3.10 GAs and Cinnamon is behaving nicely. A first for me. I stopped trying Cinnamon on my slightly older iMac but the graphics card in my new iMac works fine.

There are some issues with 'buntu based installers. Instead of just directly installing Mint I ran the Live CD and installed it from the desktop. When it finished I just kept playing in the Live CD. When I tried to shutdown the Live CD it just gave me a black screen. I had to power it off.

I should mention the guest is set to 1 CPU, 2048 RAM and 128 VRam.

This (what petedunton said) worked perfectly for me. I need to add do not save the session when you want to close the VM to be able to remove the disk image.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I had a problem when performing an update on packages on a Linux Mint 16 cinnamon 64 bit, running under Virtualbox 4.3.12.
After a global package update, through synaptic update manager, i had a Cinnamon 2.0 crash.
So i tried to make updates in several times, an i finally noticed that the packages "virtualbox-guest-xxxx" (dkms, x11, utils) version 4.2.16-dfsg3-ubuntu0, where the reason of this error.

Is it because there is a difference with my Virtualbox current version (4.3.12 vs 4.2.16 for these packages) ? Is it a problem with synapics update software ?

Hope that can help someone.

You should remove any virtualbox packages from synaptic then install the guest additions from the Devices menu.
