XP guest crashing after moving to new hardware

Hello,
I've been using VirtualBox to host VMs for my school research, to make sure if there was any problem with my hardware I could quickly boot into the VM on another machine and continue. Now that exact problem has occurred and I am having serious problems.
My old machine was an AMD 6-core machine running Win7 x64 and using VirtualBox 4.2.18. I was doing development in a WinXP guest. When my old machine died, I moved to an Intel i7 4-core with a fresh Win7 x64 install + 4.3.6.
The first problem I had was with an error message saying "vt-x is disabled in the Bios." I could not change the settings (option grayed out), so I edited the config file and set it to false.
From here on out, it will just freeze instantly after getting to the WinXP "loading user settings" - shows red bar at top of screen.
I have tried everything I could think of as far as changing settings. I tried to disable everything possible in the old image. I also made a clean XP install which works fine, and compared the config file settings. The only thing I notice that I can't change in settings is the list of guest additional components. I deleted them manually and they reappear the next time I try and boot. Nothing helps, it freezes every time I boot.
I tried going back to 4.2.18, but that didn't solve the problem.
I hope someone can help. I have very little time to spare, as my defense date is coming up fast. I was diligent about backing up VM images, but I have the same problem with all of them.
Is there anything else I can try? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
