accessing my shared folder on Scientific Linux 6.5

I have a shared folder set up in virtualbox for a Scientific Linux 6.5 x86-64 guest. When I open my SL 6.5 VM, I can see that folder in media as /media/sf_shared_data/, but I don't have access to it. In vbox, I have the shared folder set to auto mount and it does appear to be mounted.
It is a mystery to my how differently this seems to work in different linux flavors. In CentOS, my shared folder appears when I start up and I have access to it. The same is true in mint. In opensuse, the folder appears, but I am prompted for a password to access it. In SL, it does not appear and I have not access, even though SL is built over redhat like Cent.
At any rate, I need to get the folder both mounted and accessible. It would be ideal if sf_shared_data/ could appear as a bookmark in the file browser. It is a bit unclear to me why I am not prompted for a password when I try to open this folder. I just get a message that I do not have permission. Is this a permission issue where I need to add my user or the folder to a group and give the group access, or something like that. I access this folder from a number of VMs and hardware OSs, so I can't exactly take ownership over the folder from SL and not mess up access from other locations.
Advice would be appreciated.
