Hi everyone. I'm running virtualbox in a windows 7 machine and have a host system in virtualbox running Windows server 2008 R2.

I have the network adapter running a bridged setup and my network recognizes the Host Windows server 2008 running as a separate computer on the network and it is assigned its own IP. I've gotten active directory installed on the Windows Server 2008 R2 but what I'm trying to do, is have a "completely separate" computer connect to and join the virtual active directory environment but for some reason, I can't get it to work. I've gotten it to ping IP's correctly but I can't get it to recognize the domain.

Where is this "completely separate" computer? What is its network configuration?

To join the domain it will need to be using the DC for DNS. Just being able to reach the DC is not enough.

Bridged or NAT? It can't be both. Set it to bridged and check that it is bridged to the host's physical NIC. It will then be in the same network as the physical machines.

How is the DC configured? Does it have an IP in the same subnet as the router and use the router as its default gateway? If so, set the PC to use the DC's IP address for DNS and do an nslookup of the domain name from the PC. If it correctly resolves, you should be able to join the domain.

I checked the nslookup and it shows that the server is my (dlinkrouter) even when I check it in the virtual box client (Windows Server 08 R2)
